Indoor Flowering Bulb Care
|
|
During Flowering:
The ideal spot is bright, (the brighter, the better) but not sunny; free from drafts (away from heating and
air conditioning vents); with cool temperatures (about 60-70 degrees.)
Keep compost moist at all times. Turn the bowl occasionally so growth will be even. Provide some support for
tall-flowering types. Lightly apply a liquid fertilizer high in phosphorus, once a week.
|
Care after Flowering:
When blossoms fade, cut off flowers,
NOT flower-stalks. Continue watering and feeding until leaves have
naturally withered. Remove bulbs from pots, allowing several weeks to thoroughly dry. Then, remove dead foliage and
store in a cool, dry place. These bulbs will not provide a second display indoors. Plant in the garden in autumn.
When the bulb has stored enough energy (generally in a year or two) it will begin to bloom again.

Some indoor bulbs like Hippeastrum hybrids, are left in the pot when
the foliage dies down. Keep compost just barely moist until growth starts again.
A few bulbs (Achimenes, Tuberous Begonia and Canna) are stored in
slightly moist peat during the dormant period and then potted up prior to the start of
the growing season.
